Licensed RF Spectrum
Different governments have different controlling bodies determining how the RF spectrum may be used and used for what purposes. For example, in the United States, the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) regulates the use of the RF spectrum. Most international countries have their own country specific spectrum regulations. In most of the EU countries, ETSI defines the rules on the use of spectrum in these countries. However, many other countries adopt some of the ETSI regulations within their own RF spectrum rules which allows vendors to develop products that can be used in different countries.
Although not currently available for commercial or industrial uses in the United States, the 3.5GHz spectrum is the most widely allocated RF spectrum for fixed wireless applications world wide. And although RF spectrum licenses can be expensive, they do allow for protection from interference from others.
In contrast to the unlicensed spectrums, licensed spectrums provide an opportunity for wireless technologies to service mission critical applications with a greater level of confidence.
